The problem

A useful condition check starts with the parts we can safely access.

A Level 1 inspection is a visual review of accessible and applicable parts of the chimney or venting system. The exact components reviewed depend on the system, its configuration, condition, and safe access.

We explain relevant findings in plain language. A camera may be used when a closer look is needed, and roof access is attempted only when access, weather, roof conditions, and technician safety allow.

Chimney Inspection answers

Straight answers before you book.

What does a Level 1 chimney inspection include?

A visual review of accessible and applicable components. Depending on the system and safe access, that may include the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, accessible flue areas, cap, crown, flashing, exterior masonry, and appliance connection.

Is chimney cleaning included?

No. A Level 1 inspection and a chimney sweep are separate services. No cleaning is included unless it is scheduled and approved separately.

Will you use a camera or access the roof?

Only when appropriate. A camera is used when a closer view is needed. Roof access is attempted only when access, weather, roof conditions, and technician safety allow.

What systems can you inspect?

Masonry fireplaces, factory-built or prefabricated fireplaces, wood stoves, and fireplace inserts, subject to system configuration, condition, and accessibility.

What documentation will I receive?

We provide an oral explanation of relevant findings. Photos or video may be provided when useful, and a written report is available free of charge when requested.

What happens if a problem is found?

We explain the finding and discuss the next step. Any chimney repair receives a separate scope and price and requires your explicit approval before work begins.

What's included

The scheduled chimney inspection may include

  • Visual review of accessible and applicable interior components
  • Review of accessible flue areas and exterior chimney components when conditions allow
  • Camera use when a closer view is needed
  • Roof access only when it can be completed safely
  • Oral explanation of relevant findings
  • Photos or video when useful and a written report free on request

Not included

Quoted or scheduled separately

These are handled as their own service so scope and pricing stay clear.

  • Chimney sweeping or cleaning
  • Repair work or replacement parts
  • Opening walls, ceilings, or concealed construction
  • Roof access on every visit or camera use on every inspection
  • Level 2 or Level 3 inspection
  • Code-compliance certification or guaranteed discovery of hidden defects

Inspection levels

What a Level 1 covers, and when it is not the right scope

Chimney inspections are commonly described in three levels. A Level 1 is a visual review of readily accessible parts of the chimney and venting system, and it is the inspection VANTOR performs. A Level 2 adds accessible attic, crawlspace, and video review and is the scope usually expected for a property sale or after an operating change. A Level 3 involves opening concealed construction.

VANTOR performs Level 1 inspections only. If what you actually need is a Level 2 or Level 3, we will say so rather than sell you a Level 1 that will not answer your question.

Level definitions are the industry's standard descriptions, not a VANTOR grading system, and this page is not a code-compliance determination.

After the inspection

Findings come first, work comes second

An inspection is a condition check, not a cleaning or a repair. If the review turns up buildup, a chimney sweep is scheduled as its own visit; if it turns up damage, chimney repair is scoped and priced on its own.

  • Findings explained out loud, in plain language
  • Photos or video when they make a finding easier to understand
  • A written report at no charge whenever you ask for one
  • Any follow-up work quoted separately and approved by you first

Chimney Inspection FAQ

Questions, answered.

It is a visual review of accessible and applicable components. The exact areas reviewed depend on the system, its configuration, condition, and safe access.

No. Inspection and chimney sweeping are separate services, and no cleaning is included unless it is scheduled and approved separately.

We attempt roof access only when access, weather, roof conditions, and technician safety allow. Roof access is not guaranteed.

A camera is used when a closer view is needed, not automatically during every Level 1 inspection.

We explain relevant findings verbally, provide photos or video when useful, and provide a written report free of charge when requested.

Sometimes. Same-day work is considered only when the repair is suitable, access and materials allow it, it can be completed safely, and you explicitly approve the additional scope and price.
